…Insist on reduction of land to be acquired
The Nsulu Airport Landowners and Host Communities Forum, representing host to the proposed Abia Airport in Nsulu, Isiala Ngwa North Local Government Area of Abia State, has rejected the enumeration being embarked upon by the state government whereas many concerns of the communities have not been addressed.
In a letter by Dr. Max Nduaguibe, chairman and Secretary, Mr. Elele Felix, addressed to the Chief of Staff, CoS, Government of Abia State, the forum said: “Our resolutions are sequel to a virtual meeting convener to deliberate on the outcome of the Zoom meeting held between the landowners’ technical committee and the government on February 9, 2025.
“Following extensive discussions, we wish to formally express our position on the ongoing enumeration exercise and other related concerns.

“The forum appreciates the state governor, for approving a further reduction in the land designated for the airport project.
“We welcome this decision and commend His Excellency’s magnanimity in addressing the concerns of the landowners.
“The forum strongly condemns the forceful entry of government officials onto the land and the unauthorised commencement of enumeration and collection of landowners’ payment details.
“Additionally, the government has unilaterally nominated and imposed estate surveyors to represent our people as their attorneys without consultation or agreement.
“This action, which was neither discussed nor agreed upon in the previous Zoom meeting, demonstrates bad faith, undermines the negotiation process, and raises serious concerns about the sincerity of the government’s approach.

“The forum unanimously resolves that enumeration can only proceed after the actual size of the land to be acquired has been mutually agreed upon and formally determined by both parties and a binding Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed by all relevant stakeholders to ensure fairness and transparency.
“In light of these issues, we respectfully request the immediate withdrawal of the government’s enumeration team to allow for continued negotiations at the rescheduled meeting on February 16, 2025.
“Suspending the enumeration process will help restore the confidence of the landowners in the sincerity of the government’s acquisition process and ensure the cooperation and safety of field workers.
“We have observed that your Zoom meeting platform imposes restrictions that prevent our nominated representatives from participating in discussions while all government representatives enjoy unrestricted access.
“To ensure adequate representation and fair engagement, we urge you to address this issue ahead of the next meeting.
“We trust that you will take immediate action on the concerns outlined in this letter. We look forward to your prompt response and a resolution that upholds fairness, transparency, and mutual respect.”
