Amnesty International had condemned the invasion of the studios of ABN TV/Radio Umuahia, Abia State by the Nigeria Police and the arbitrary arrest of a suspect, who was participating in a live programme “Youth Rendezvous.”
Amnesty International in a statement, on Thursday, said: “This incident clearly demonstrates total disregard for right to freedom of expression, media freedom and the due process of law.
“It is unacceptable that despite repeated plea by the staff of ABN TV/Radio; to the police to allow the programme come to an end before the guest could be arrested, they insisted and whisked him away while the live programme was ongoing.
“The Nigerian authorities have obligations to uphold and respect human rights.
“Nigeria Police must investigate this incident and hold to account all the officers involved in the arbitrary arrest that also undermines media freedom,” it added.
