Brutalization of Ajaero: NLC/TUC tells members ‘stay away from work’

…commences nationwide strike

Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC and Trade Union Congress of Nigeria, TUC, on Monday, ordered members to from Tuesday, stay away from work, as the nationwide strike commences.

Labour is protesting the brutalization of NLC President, Joe Ajaero in Owerri, Imo Stateon November 1.

Labour had after the November 1, incident, call on government to redeploy and investigate of the Commissioner of Police, Imo State Command; sack the Area Commander of the Nigeria Police Force and all other Officers and Men in Owerri through whom the Police Commissioner supervised the brutalisation and humiliation of Ajaero and other workers and Mr. Nwaneri Chinasa, Adviser on Special Duties, who supervised the terror on workers and bestial brutality meted out to congress President, Joe Ajaero be arrested immediately and prosecuted for his crimes against workers and the President.

Others are an immediate, independent and unbiased thorough professional medical examination of Ajaero in light of the physical and psychological injuries inflicted on him; other workers and journalists subjected to inhuman treatment by the Police and the Hope Uzodimma’s goons be treated by the state and all the property lost be restored immediately and the implementation of all outstanding Industrial Relations issues as previously agreed with the Imo state government.

Of the demands, only Imo State police commissioner was redeployed.

In a circular, entitled: ‘NLC/TUC Nationwide strike action: A gentle reminder,’ Labour on Monday, said:

In furtherance to the decision of the Joint National Executive Council, NEC of NLC and TUC, all workers in Nigeria are directed to withdraw their services effective 12 midnight, November 13, today,  2023.

Consequently, all affiliates and state councils of NLC/TUC are directed to issue circulars for maximum compliance and these circulars be made available to the National Secretariats or posted to the NEC and CWC Whatsapp Platforms.

While we shalt update you with developments as they unfold, do remain assured of our commitment to Nigerian workers and people.

The circular was signed by NLC Secretary General, Emmanuel Ugboaja and TUC Secretary General, Nuhu Toro.
