Coup: UN Chief demands release of detained Nigerien President

Deposed Niger’s President, Mohammed Buzoum

The United Nations, UN, Secretary General Antonio Guterres has called for the unconditional release of Niger’s President Mohammed Buzoum, following a military coup in that country.

Buzoum was detained late on Wednesday, after members of the president’s own guard detained him inside his offices in the capital Niamey.

Guterres, addressing reporters at UN Headquarters in New York, on Thursday, again strongly condemned the attempted military takeover and the assault against the democratically elected government.

The UN expressed support for the efforts of the West African bloc ECOWAS and the African Union, AU, to restore democracy.
